PSYC-2200 Chapter Notes - Chapter 12, 13, 15: Mirror Neuron, 18 Months
Document Summary
Gender stereotypes: widely held beliefs about characteristics deemed appropriate for males and females. Gender roles: are the re ection of stereotypes in everyday behaviour. Gender identity: private face of gender - perception of the self as relatively masculine or feminine in characteristics. Gender typing: refers broadly to ay association of objects, activities, roles, or traits with biological sex in ways that conform to cultural stereotypes of gender. Children begin labelling their gender by age 18 months - 3 years. They do not believe that gender stereotypes can be violated. Gender-stereotype flexibility: overlap in the characteristics of males and females. Increases dramatically from age 7 and on. By saying that they can cross gender lines does not equal approval for children. The most gender-typed infants turned into the most gender-typed school children. Language is a powerful indirect means for teaching children about gender stereotypes and gender roles.
