In 19th century there was a shift from examining artifacts to the people who used the artifacts. Houses very different in the same time span. Archaeologists document and examine how the material matter changes through time. They can address the entire history of humanity based on things that people left behind. They have space and time are their disposal. Clean it - except this is by no means an easy process. Water might take away some valuable information. Things recovered from wet deposits have to be very careful with. The conservation of artifacts has become a specialty within archaeology. When things are broken and in pieces it takes a long time and precision to put it together. It like like doing a 3 dimensional jigsaw puzzle with no picture on the box and pieces missing. Takes someone who doesn"t mind sitting for hours.
