Media’s role in establishment of body image

1. Thesis statement
The media has a negative effect in our perception of body image. Social norms are
twisted so that a normal body is seen as “ugly” and an unhealthy body is seen as
“beautiful”, causing negative self-image, eating disorders, depression and other health
risks & illnesses.
2. Supporting arguments/evidence to support thesis
-Males and Females feel the need to change their physical appearance in order for
them to live up to the “ideal” body image they see in magazines, TV shows,
commercials and other media related advertisements. (Sociology)
-The more that people are looking at the media and how it portrays the human body,
the lower the self-esteem and the higher the chances are of developing eating
disorders, depression, anxiety or other mental illnesses. (Psychology)
-Media is causing people to care more about image than their health. Many people
would rather have the “Ideal” body and be unhealthy, than have a normal healthy
body if it helps them fit into the medias perspective of beauty. (Sociology)

-A 2002 Statistics Canada report revealed that 48 percent of thirteen-year-old girls and
53 percent of fifteen-year-old girls said they would change the way they look if they
could.
- A study conducted at the University of Toronto revealed that female anthropology
students felt angry and depressed after looking at twenty images of emaciated models,
yet there are hundreds of such images in one fashion magazine alone.
-In 2006, two studies from Australia mirrored this troubling trend. One study,
conducted with 100 Australian girls aged nine through twelve, revealed that 49
percent wanted to be thinner, even though 85 percent of the girls who participated in
the study were classified as being a healthy weight.
