Mothering expectant mothers: consumption, production, and 2 motherhoods in. Mothers held primarily responsible for the health and intelligence of their (future) Ideal model of family encouraged by the chinese state each couple has one high quality child. Today, complicated interactions take place between expectant mothers, their older mothers, and experts on childbearing. In china, the female body is viewed as emblematic of the family future. Role of grandmother: provide material and economic support, moves into her daughters house during pregnancy & remains until child is 3, common for conflict to arise between the 2 generations. This article explores: argumentative mode of communication as a means of sharing knowledge and promotion hybrid practices, distinctive identities formed modern vs old mother; can be seen through practice preference. Based on 3 years of fieldwork in urban zhengzhou.
