Anthropology 1020E Chapter Notes - Chapter 1-3: Lithic Analysis, Knapping, Hand Axe
Document Summary
Careful atenion should be given to both the locaion and extent of digging. No universal way to excavate but some methods are more suitable than others, depending on research goals and money. Provenience is established with a total staion, which can record both horizontal and verical provenience electronically. Begins with a system of classiicaion known as typology: maybe descripive, funcional, or a hybrid of both. Descripive typology- classiies arifacts according to observable, measurable traits, such as its material shape, size, and any evidence of its manufacture. Descripive typology- for example, a stone may be classiied as a small, triangular, lithic biface. Using funcional typology- arifact may be classiied as an arrowhead. A hybrid classiicaion- could categorize the arifact as a small, triangular, arrowhead: no best way to classify, prehistoric=descripive, historic=funcional. Lithic arifacts are generally analysed to determine the way they were made and what they were used for, as well as to the speciic kind of stone.
