Chapter 3: the meaning of progress and development. Bands: a term used to refer to egalitarian units of social organization, found mostly among foragers. These units usually consist of less than 100 people. Sedentary: a mode of livelihood characterized by permanent or semi permanent settlements. The moral predicament involves our perceptions of the few remaining small scale societies that exist today and of the millions of people that go hungry each day. Progress: the idea that human history is the story of a steady advance from a life dependent on the whims of nature to a life of control and dominations over natural control. Cultural change: the changes in meanings that a people ascribe to experience and changes in their way of life. 10,000 years ago, humans use to live by gathering wild plants and hunting small + large game. And because the search for food required mobility, it was not unusual for them to move every few days.
