We can observe changes in the same region over a long period of ime: longue dur e. Lain word for civis (ciizen) and civitas (community) made the word city. Lain word for city is urbs, hence urbanism. Populaion centres can be of dif scales, and even romans disinguished these: city, town, village, hamlet. City is deined in opposiion to the countryside. Countryside has land, raw materials, agricultural products to support the city. City ofers: economy: natural resources and commerce from a geographical advantage (e. g. a harbour) and an area of agricultural prosperity.
