Mass culture: culture that is accessible, widely available and intended for consumption by as many people as possible. Cultural norms: norms that everyone adheres to in some ways but everyone also goes against in numerous other ways. The attack on popular culture has led to the creation of new forms of popular culture, which themselves are absorbed into mainstream culture. It makes no sense for sub or counter culture to be considered dominant. Highlights important events and milestones in american history during the wwii era and explores the related shifts in culture and sensibility. Forrest represents the adventure that american undergoes during this era and he is a representation of mainstream culture: mainstream is shown to be unthinking; emotional and intuitive rather than reasoned and reflective. Jenny is unable to follow his path (sexually abused) and she is a part of counter and sub cultures.
