Chapter 5­ Psychology and Physical Health - ppl’s health is more compromised by chronic diseases rather than contagious  diseases  - 3 leading chronic diseases (heart disease, cancer and stroke) = 60% of deaths  - Biopsychosocial Model: physical illness is cause by a complex interaction of  biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors - Health Psychology: concerned with how psychosocial factors relate to the  promotion and maintenance of health w/ the causation, prevention and treatment  of illness Stress, Personality, and Illness Personality, Emotions, and Heart Disease - accounts for 27% of deaths in US/year - Coronary Herat Disease: reduction in blood flow through the coronary arteries,  which supply heart w/ blood o causes 90% of heart deaths o Atherosclerosis (narrowing of coronary arteries) is principle cause  o eventually leads to heart attack (myocardial infarction) o risk factors: smoking, diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol levels - emerge in women 10 years after men Hostility and Coronary Risk - Friedman and Rosenman: connection between coronary risk and Type A  Personality - Type A Personality: includes 3 elements (1) strong competitive orientation, (2)  impatience and time urgency, (3) anger and hostility  o ambitious, perfectionists o try to do several things at once - Type B Personality: relatively relaxed, patient, easygoing behavior - Recent studies: stronger correlation when focusing on specific component of Type  A ­ anger/hostility o Hostility: persistent negative attitude marked by cynical, mistrusting  thoughts and aggressive actions o high anger ppl experienced 3X more as many coronary events o abbove avg hostility scores = more likey to develop atherosclerosis  o hostility plays greater role for blacks - Exp
