Representation: the social production of meaning through sign systems. Involved making meaning by creating links between conceptual and linguistic or signifying levels of meaning. Links that are established through codes shared by members of a culture: representation constructs the world in particular ways that have significant bearing on the organization of society. Agency: the ability of individuals to act as self conscious, willful social actors and to exert their will through involvement in social practices, relationships and decision making. Ideology names those social and political processes that directly and indirectly make everyday life seem natural, inevitable and unchangeable: makes false statements not only sound like the truth, but also like common sense. Implicated in the process of colonialism and racism. Individualism promotes a society in which individual choice is not restricted by external constraints and in which individual members should practice self reliance and responsibility.
