Ontario"s economy fell off the rails and the province received its first equalization payments in. Many ontario manufacturers cannot match the production costs found in china and other low- wage countries. Manufacturing plants in canada and the united states continue to close and the number of workers in the manufacturing sector continues to decline. Economists have termed this effect of globalization on the manufacturing sector found in development countries as the china syndrome. Extending over ontario are three of canada"s physiographic regions (great lakes st. Lawrence lowlands, canadian shield, and hudson bay lowlands), and three of the country"s climate zones (arctic, subarctic, and great lakes st lawrence). Air drainage from the niagara escarpment to lake ontario reduces the danger of both spring and fall frosts. Ontario"s cities, especially toronto, face two hidden costs associated with urban pollution, namely disposing of waste products and paying for the health cost of air pollution from smog caused mainly by vehicular traffic.
