Document Summary
Spot elevation- a location where the elevation of the land surface has been determined (relative to msl) and is depicted numerically on the map. Benchmark- a fixed brass plate in the ground at an area of known elevation. Supplementary contours (in areas with minimal elevation change) Depression contours- a contour used to identify closed depressions or basin- like features; shown on maps a line with right angle ticks added to the downslope of the contour. Cut contour- man-made change in elevation such a roadway cut through a hill. Fill contour- which show where terrain has been raise to support a road or railway grade. Carrying contours- used to show vertical topographic features such as cliffs and escarpments. Depth contours (in the water) found on nautical charts and other bathymetric maps. Areas of different elevation filled in different colours. Colour ramp- continuous succession of colours between a specified beginning and ending colour.
