Healthsci 1001B 1/8/2013 9:20:00 AM What is health? -The state of complete… The WHO definition - Not just the medical community In 1986 the definition was updated by the WHO ( Ottawa Charter) -Health is, therefore seen as a resource of every day life… Health is a positive concept emphasizing social and personal resources, as well as physical capabilities What is wellness? - Talking about living a really meaningful life, and things we can do to foster a more meaningful life -Ability to live life fully with vitality and meaning - Extended version of health An expanded idea of health The ability to live life fully, with vitality and meaning Largely determined by the decisions you make about how you live your life Not a static goal but a dynamics process of change and growth 7 Dimensions Physical- number one by medical definition (cause of health) Influences QOL and how many years you will live Health-related QOL- a personal sense of physical and mental health. Required a full range of functional capacity to enable people to work, play and maintain functional relationships . Interpersonal/ Social Wellness Involves leaning effective communication skills, developing the capacity for intimacy ( loving others and allowing others to love you) Mental/Intellectual -To think critically and learn new skills to process and use new info Occupational wellness Involves attaining a work-life balance > Takes a lot of practice (most important part of occupational) Emotional -ability to share feelings & Finding solutions to emotional problems (most related to feelings) Environmental -Depends on the health of the planet -Can to decrease or eliminate these hazards Spiritual -Having a set of guiding beliefs, principals, or values that give meaning and purpose to ones li
