About 1/2 of us ethnic minorities elderly live in cities compared to 1/3 of caucasian. Suburban older adults have higher incomes and report better health than inner-city counterparts. Inner-city have better transportation which is increasingly important as physical functionality declines. Small-town/rural seniors are less likely to live near their children: compensate by interacting with nearby neighbours & extended family, now have transportation programs to health services, grocery/shopping stores etc. Strong desire for aging in place remaining in a family setting where they have control over everyday life. 90% of older people in western nations remain in or near their old home. >40% of american seniors alone are poverty stricken. 7% of us adults 65+ live in communities.
