These age groups vary greatly and so, services ad programs should be planned, oriented and delivered in different ways for each group. Young-old need programs and services to reintegrate them back into meaningful roles and activities, whereas, old-old need supportive and protective services. Ways we age: biologically, psychologically, sociologically, spiritually and chronologically (not descriptive of person but used for legal reasons) Gerontology- the broad study of the aging process. Incorporates multidisciplinary concepts and approaches and 3 academic areas: Biological aging- concerned with longevity and how and why the body changes with age. Psychological aging- concerned with adaptive capabilities i. e. memory, Social aging- concerned with social roles and expectations for older adults in intelligence, and coping with aging particular cultures or societies. Geriatrics- a specialty concentrated on medical problems associated with growing old. Efforts to differentiate normal aging from disease/ pathology.
