Health Sciences 3701A/B Chapter Notes - Chapter 14: Abdominal Cavity, B Cell, Macrophage
Document Summary
Numerous vessels that transport back to the blood and fluids that have escaped the vascular system. Destroy bacteria before reaching intestinal wall and can produce lymphocytes. Autoimmune is when body destroys its own healthy cells. Anatomical barriers- physical barriers (skin, mucous membranes), biochemical barriers, mechanical means (fever, vomiting, diarrhea)-nonspecific response. Inflammation response- monocytes (macrophages), neutrophils and natural killer cells-nonspecific response. Immunity despite never coming in contact with antigen. Involve first and second line of defense. Involve compliment system- collection of proteins that kill antigens as well as initiate immune response. Humoral immunity- defends body against extracellular antigens found in the blood or fluids through production of antibodies (bind with specific antigen to destroy it) generated by b lymphocytes. Cell-mediated immunity- t-cell lymphocytes to attack and destroy. B and t cells have a memory and can learn to identify specific antigens. Common infections: pneumonia, influenze, shingles, uti, cancer.
