Beyond techno-utopia: critical approaches to digital health technologies. There have been three waves of digital technology adoption in health care. The first wave occurred in the 1950s and involved computerised technologies to automate tasks such as accounting and payroll. Health insurance companies also used technology to analyse data. The second wave occurred in the 1970s and involved health informatics and electronic health card systems. Both involved individual institutions establishing different systems. The third wave is currently occurring and involves digitizing various elements of health care - w/ an overarching framework that incorporates data from inside and outside of the sector. There has been an emerging discourse on digital health technologies over the past few years - leading to wicked problems of public health and medicine. These technologies have a disruptive and revolutionary nature w/ potential to address various areas of health care. The devices and software include social media and remote healthcare consultations.
