Data collection that is rigorous is a crucial component of qualitative research. Most effort is spent developing a data collection protocol that is systematic and well-developed. The three mandatory components of a qualitative data collection protocol are: developing a clear collection strategy, appropriately identifying and sampling the population of interest, obtaining data in a reproducible and rich manner (pp. 1104) It is important to use an outline that begins with an introduction that outlines the goals of the study, rules, how the session will flow, and a statement of confidentiality. It should then have an easy question that is non controversial - followed up by topic headings with a combination of open questions, main questions, follow-up questions and probing questions.
