Four in ten marriages end in divorce. Common law relationships and the laws regarding it are increasingly mimicking the laws regarding normal marriage. The family law act says that those who cohabit for more than three years or who have a child together have the same support obligations to one another as married people do. Couples need to either get a marriage license (what more people do when they want to get married) or have a publication of banns during religious worship services. Says there must be two witnesses at the ceremony. The marriage act says that no person is to issue a license to a minor or officiate a marriage with a minor unless the person is 16 years or older and has parental consent. Prohibited degrees of consanguinity and affinity: people who are too closely related by blood (consanguinity) or through family ties may lack the capacity to marry each other.
