MIT EXAM LECTURE NOTES:     Page.  266-­‐271     From  the  Girl  from  Gods  Country:  Nell  Shipman  and  the  Silent  Cinema     Part  One:  Biography     • Born  Helen  Barham  in  BC  1892   • Poor  family-­‐  British  roots,  dad  was  colonial  son   • Moved  to  USA,  didn’t  return  but  still  attached  to  roots   • Left  at  13  to  be  actress   • Mom  came  on  road  with  her  to  help   • 1912:  wrote  and  starred  in  a  film,  directed  first  film  “gods  country”   o shows  wilderness,  animal  tales-­‐  outdoorsy   • Curwood  was  the  author   • Shows  adventures  in  Canadian  north   • She’s  the  heroine   • Then  got  new  manager-­‐  Tuyle   o He  rand  team  lived  in  wilderness,  making  moves  independently   o Dogsled  and  snowshoe   o Frostbite  etc.   • She  had  her  own  zoo  of  wild  animals  (e.g.  bear  named  Brownie)   • All  of  Shipmen’s  films  featured  animals  in  prominent  roles   • She  did  not  take  part  in  Canadian  film  industry    -­‐  would  take  films  to  NYC     Theaters  at  this  time:     • 1908:  14  street  in  NYC  well  established  exchange  row   • by  1923  every  town  even  ones  with  less  than  10,000  people  had  theaters  open  7   days  a  week     Film  industry:     th • carry  film  down  14  street  until
