Description
Chapter 2: Map Scale Expressing Scale The amount of size reduction is known as the map scale, which tells you the relationship between  distances on the map and their corresponding ground distances. “This distance on the map represents  this distance on the earth’s surface”. Representative fraction (RF) This is the ratio between map and ground distance. An RF is written either as 1/x or 1:x. The numerator is always 1 and represents map distance, while denominator (x) indicates distance  on the ground in the same units of measurement as the distance on map. 1/x=map distance/ground distance Verbal Scale The verbal scale expresses large RF denominator values in more familiar (larger) units of  measurements. Example; “Inches to 1 mile” or “centimeters to 1 kilometer”. The smaller unit of  measurement (inches or centimeters) always refers to the map while the larger measurement unit  refers to the ground.  Scale Bar This is the 3  and last way to show map scale. Scale bar (or bar scale) is placed on the map to  simplify distance measurements. You’ll usually read the scale bar from left to right, beginning at  0. Sometimes the scale bar is extended to the left of the 0 point, this is used for smaller markings.  So, this way it lets you to calculate distance not only in whole units but also in fractions.   However, there will a
