Media, Information and Technoculture 2153A/B Chapter Notes - Chapter 1-7: Culture Industry, Technological Determinism, Cultural Determinism
Document Summary
Corporate professional refers to social relations between symbol creators on the one hand, and patrons/businesses on the other. Complex professional form was the dominant way in which production was organized. Patronage & market professional forms, dominant in previous eras, continued to exist in residual forms. Beginning in the 20th century, cultural production gained a new ecumenic and social significance. Industrialization involves significant capital investment, mechanized production and the division of labour. Transforming something into a commodity = producing things not only for use but for exchange. Capitalism can nevertheless be understood as a system involving a continual extension of commodification. There is serious conflict between commercial institutions that attempt to make cultural works their private property and common ownership of, or access to, cultural goods. All societies will attempt to withdraw certain domains from market relations: examples include religion, personal life, political sphere, and art.
