Jewish adolescents more vulnerable: major cause of death with eating disorders = suicide. Etiology: no single cause of eating disorders . mix of psychological risk factors, sociocultural influences, biological , genetic predisposition. Strong genetic link for eating disorders ( twin studies show 50 % heretiability : altered brain serotonin function contributes to dysregulation of appetite, mood, and impulse control. Environmental factors: western culture that beauty = thin. View of self as fat even when emaciated. Possible self induced vomiting /use of laxatives/diuretics.
