Desire of a more open and tolerant society where people would be free to pursue their own interests and ideas with as little interference as possible. Liberals believe: self-interest is the primary motive for all individuals competition is healthy if it is fair and within proper bounds rational. Freedom = the relationship between an agent that is free from an obstacle as to pursue a goal. Freedom therefore should be promoted in each individual person. Poverty, racial and sexual prejudices, ignorance and illness are obstacles to individual freedom. Each person needs equal opportunity to join liberty as no person"s liberty is more important than another"s, every person should have equal opportunity not be conceived equally. Competition is key in achieving equal footing for success. Necessity of freedom of religion and the separation of the church and the state.
