Each liberation ideology addresses a particular audience (e. g. blacks, women, gays) Members of these audiences do not choose to be in these audiences they are a group of people who share certain characteristics that are a major part of their identity. Each group addressed understands itself to be mistreated or oppressed by a dominant group. Each group aims to liberate an oppressed group not only from external restraints or restrictions such as unjust laws or barriers but also from internal restrictions such as beliefs and attitudes that oppressed people have come to accept. All groups aim to raise the consciousness and change the outlooks of people who have participated to their oppression or victimization.
