THE FOUR LOVES – CS LEWIS CHARITY  When he has done all, he has merely encouraged here and discouraged there, powers and beauties that have a different source  It is dangerous to press upon a man the duty of getting beyond earthly love when his real difficulty lies in getting so far  Victorians older theologians were always saying very loudly that natural love is likely to be a great deal too much  All human beings pass away, do not let your happiness depend on something you may lose  The alternative to tragedy or at least the risk of tragedy is damnation  It remains certainly true that all natural loves can be inordinate  In the last resort we must turn down or disqualify our nearest and dearest when they come between us and our obedience to God  In God there is no hunger that needs to be filled, only plenteousness that desires to give  Gift loves are natural images of himself; proximities to him by resemblance which are not necessarily and in all men proxim
