Aim to exercise governmental power by winning political office. Small parties may use elections as a way to gain a platform. Organized in bodies of formal card carrying membership. Adopt a broad issue focus, addressing each of the major areas of government policy. United by shared political preferences and a general ideological identity. Political parties are link between society and state. Political party: group of people that organize for purpose of winning governmental power. 1950: 80% of the countries had political parties. 1960: this decreased due to increase of military regimes. 1980: these regimes calmed down and increased political parties. Old parties, called factions , were centred around monarchies and autocracies. First formed in us after founding fathers created constitution. Socialist parties originally formed outside of government but joined system to shape policy. Cadre: party of notables, now more commonly used to denote trained and professional party members who are expected to exhibit a high level of political commitment.
