Document Summary
Psychological disorders are the second leading cause of disability, after heart disease. At various times, psychological disorders have been viewed as the work of demons, as physical diseases, as the result of psychological conflicts, as learned maladaptive behaviors, and as a product of the ways in which we perceive our world. The belief that abnormal behavior is caused by supernatural forces goes back to the ancient. He believed that the site of illness was the brain, which he saw as the organ of the mind. The behavioral perspective views disordered behaviors as learned responses that, like normal behaviors, are learned through classical conditioning, operant conditioning, and modeling. Disorder occurs when stressors combine with vulnerability to trigger the appearance of the disorder. Abnormality is, in the final analysis, a social construction. We might define abnormal behavior as behavior that is personally distressful, personally dysfunctional, and/or so culturally deviant that other people judge it to be inappropriate or maladaptive.
