Grapefruit sized three pound mass of tissue made up of neurons. Neurons are the building blocks of the nervous system. At birth our brains are made up of about 100 billion neurons. Outermost layer of brain is the cerebral cortex. Temporal - auditory ,language: occipital - visual, parietal - sensory. Phineas gage (1848: worked on railway and had an iron bar shoved through his head. Memory and movement intact, could learn new things. Personality changed dramatically , honest and kind to nasty swearing. Areas of brain damaged are reasonable for personally and decision making. Aphasia-partial or total loss of the ability to communicate. Depending on the location of the damage ,the speci c issue will differ. Cannot form full sentences: words are consistent but cannot produce language. Our brains have left and right cerebral hemispheres. Lateralization-refers to the relatively greater location of a function in one hemisphere or the other.
