Document Summary
Descriptive statistics: psychological research often involves a large number of measurements, descriptive statistics summarize and describe the characteristics of a set of scores. To summarize a set of scores, we might rst construct a frequency distribution, which shows how many participants received each score. Typically, the scores are plotted along the horizontal axis and the frequencies are plotted on the vertical axis. There are three commonly used measures of central tendency: the mode, the mean, and the median. The mode is the most frequently occurring score in a distribution. It is not always the most representative score. The most commonly used measure of central tendency, the mean, represents the arithmetic average of a set of scores. The statistical formula for computing the mean is: x is the symbol for an individual score, n denotes the number of scores, and m is the symbol for the mean of the individual scores.
