Psycholinguistics: the scientific study of the psychological aspects of language; how people understand, produce and acquire language. A system of symbols and rules for combining these symbols in ways that can produce an almost infinite number of possible message and meaning. Uses sounds, written signs, or gestures to refer to objects, events, ideas, and feelings. Displacement: language allows us to communicate and represent objects & conditions that aren(cid:495)t physically present. Grammar; has rules that govern how symbols can be combined to create meaningful communication units. Symbols can be combined to generate infinite # of messages when you read, listen to, or produce a sentence; the way words are combined. Syntax: the rules for the combination of symbols the underlying meaning of combined symbols- brings us back to the issue of semantics. Semantics: the rules for connecting symbols to what they represent.
