Document Summary

Synesthesia mixing of senses: women are more likely to be synaesthetes than men, sounds as colours, tastes as touch. Transduction the process of our sensory receptors translating information (from stimuli) into the language of nerve impulses, which is the only one our body understands. Once this translation happens, specialized neurons called feature detectors break down and analyze the specific features of the stimuli. Then after this, all these stimuli pieces are reconstructed in a neural representation that is then compared with previously stored info, like our knowledge of what certain things look like, smell like, feel like, etc. This comparison allows us to recognize the stimulus and give it meaning. In people with synesthesia, there is cross-wiring; activity in one part of the brain evokes responses in another part of the brain dedicated to another sensory system. Binding problem how do we bind all our perceptions into one complete whole while keeping its sensory elements separate.
