Freud"s ps(cid:455)(cid:272)hoa(cid:374)al(cid:455)ti(cid:272) theor(cid:455: over time, psychoanalysis became a theory of personality, an approach to studying the mind, and a method for treating psychological disorders. The structure of personality: freud divided personality into 3 separate but interacting structures (in order of development) Id exists totally within the unconscious mind. 527: psychoanalysts believe that repression is the primary means by which the ego controls the id. In repression, the ego uses some of its energy to prevent anxiety-arousing memories, feelings, and impulses from entering consciousness: freud"s pri(cid:373)ar(cid:455) i(cid:374)terest out of all (cid:373)e(cid:272)ha(cid:374)is(cid:373)s. When university students were instructed to think about 2 people they know and then were told to suppress thoughts about one, they dreamed more often of suppressed targets. Evaluating psychoanalytic theory: many of its specific propositions have not held up under the scrutiny of research, explains too much to allow clear-cut behavioural predictions untestable.
