Consciousness: moment-to-moment awareness of ourselves and our environment consciousness has many characteristics among them are: subjective and private: each individual"s reality is private. Self report: a measuring technique in which people describe their inner experiences. Allows direct insight into personal experiences but cannot always be verified. Psychological measures: measure which establishes a connection between bodily states and mental processes. They are objective but cannot tell us about personal experience: eeg recordings: measure brain activity to identify different stages of sleep throughout the night. Behavioral measures: measures performance on special tasks. They are objective but cannot give any input on internal state of mind. Sigmund freud proposed that the mind consisted of 3 levels of awareness. Conscious mind: thoughts, perceptions and other mental events which we are aware of. Preconscious: consist of thoughts which are not conscious but can be recalled under certain conditions. Unconscious: cannot be brought into conscious mind under normal conditions.
