Self management: involvement of the patient in all aspects of a chronic illness and its implications (medication, social and vocational roles, coping) Medical measures are only weakly related to a patients assessment of qol. Study: physicians said the qol of their patients increased when using medication, only 50% agreed. Important aspect of qol peoples perception of their own health: self reports of health status found to predict morbidity and mortality beyond medical and psychological factors. Psychological distress patients with chronic illness often experience. Impetus for evaluating qol: chronic illness patients more likely to suffer from depression, anxiety, and distress, psychological distress and neuroticism contribute to increased risk for mortality from chronic conditions, stress exacerbates symptoms and course of illness. Depression and anxiety common consequences of stress. Reducing stress levels and managing stressors = paramount to management of chronic illness.
