Psychology 2035A/B Chapter Notes - Chapter 15: Behaviour Therapy, Sigmund Freud, Dream Interpretation
Document Summary
All psychotherapies involve a helping relationship (the treatment) between a professional (the therapist) and another person in need of help (the client). There are three main categories of therapy: Interventions into a persons physiological functioning: ex: drug therapy and electroconvulsive therapy. Using data from an ongoing national survey focusing on patterns of healthcare, olfson and marcus (2010) found some interesting trends in outpatient treatment for psychological disorders. Comparing treatment procedures in 1998 and 2007, they found that the percentage of patients treated with medication exclusively increased fro 44% to 57%. During the same time period, the percentage of patients treated with insight or behavioral therapy alone, or in combination with drug therapy, declined. Clients in treatment do not necessarily have an identifiable psychological disorder. People seek treatment for milder problems, such as making a career decision. The most common psychological disorders people seek treatment for are excessive anxiety and depression.
