Chp. 1 Key Terms
Adjustment: psychological processes which people manage or cope with the demands
and challenges of everyday life.
Affective Forecasting: efforts to predict one’s emotional reactions to future events.
Behaviour: an observable response or activity by an organism
Case Study: an in depth investifation of an individual subject.
Clinical Psychology: concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of psychological
problems and disorders.
Control Group: subjects in experiment who do not receive the special treatment given to
the experimental group.
Correlation: extent to which two variables are related to each other.
Correlation Coefficient: the degree of the relationship between two variables (between
-1 and +1)
Dependant Variable: variable that is thought to be affected by changes in the
Empiricism: the premise that knowledge should be acquired thourhg observation.
Experiment: research method involving changes to an independent variable to see
changes in dependant variable. Done under controlled conditions.
Experimental Group: subjects in experiment who receive changes in independent
Hedonic Adaptation: occurs when the mental scale that people use to judge the
pleasantness and unpleasantness of their experiences shifts so that their neutral point/
baseline for comparison is changed.
Independent Variable: condition or event in an experiment that an experimenter varies
in order to see its impact on another variable.
Mnemonic Devices: strategies for enhancing memory.
Narcissism: tendency to regard oneself as grandiosely self-important.
Naturalistic Observation: approach to research in which the researcher engages in
careful observation of behaviour without intervening directly. (Observational)
Overlearning: continued rehearsal of material after one has first appeared to have
Subjective Well-being: personal assessments of one’s own overall happiness or life
