Gender stereotypes: males differ physically in their anatomy but these gender differences have led people to expect other differences as well, especially with regard to social roles, research indicates that beliefs about the typical attributes characteristic of men and women are widely shared across the world, gender stereotypes for men generally reflect the quality of instrumentality; an orientation toward action and accomplishment, whereas the stereotypes for women reflect the quality of expressiveness, an orientation toward emotion and relationships, despite the general agreement on a number of stereotypes, variability also occurs. But there are some differences in specific cognitive skills: verbal abilities, (vocabulary, reading, writing, spelling, and grammar, girls have the edge although gender differences are small, girls start speaking earlier, have larger vocabularies and better reading scores in grade school, and are more verbally fluent (on tests of writing), boys are better at verbal analogies.
