We use provider instead of physician because canadians are increasingly receiving their care from individuals other than physicians (i. e. nps, alternative medicine providers) Np is a nurse who has additional education in health assessment, diagnosis, and management of injuries and illness. Nps can order tests and prescribe drugs. Private practice, community clinics, hospitals, nursing homes, home care settings. Practice emphasises health promotion and illness prevention. Nps are used to complement other providers, not replace them. Telehealth consultation, diagnoses, treatment, and family visiting using audio-video conferencing. Scope of practice depends on where they are working and who the physician is. Similar practice to np examinations, diagnoses, ordering and interpreting tests, prescriptions, assisting in surgery. We are seeing increased use of pas in canada to alleviate some of the strain on health care system due to physician shortages. Criticisms come from volume of jargon, little feedback, depersonalized care.
