Living longer may not necessarily translate into living healthier or with a good quality of life. Using principles of health promotion can help reduce risks such as development of chronic/degenerative diseases and help canadians live healthy and rewarding lives as they age. Growth of canadian seniors, started to accelerate in 2011 as the baby boomers began to turn 65, with ~5 million seniors in canada. We will reach a point soon were seniors will outnumber children aged 14 and under. We can expect to see a higher incidence of chronic, but not life threatening conditions. Effort to control these non-communicable disease must necessarily focus on prevention ex. incidence of deafness and vision problems will be a growing concern. We will see the largest elderly cohort in canada. There are a number of healthy aging indicators that have been identified to better understand how well the canadian population is aging.
