Classification and taxonomy: the delineation of major categories or dimensions of behavioral disorders, done for either clinical or scientific purposes. Diagnosis: assigning a category of classification system to an individual. Assessment: evaluating youngsters, in part to assist the processes of classification and diagnosis and to direct intervention. Classification systems used to systematically describe a phenomenon. Category: discrete grouping, ex. anxiety disorder, into which an individual is judged to fit or not fit. Dimension: an attribute is continuous and can occur to various degrees. Ex. child can exhibit high, moderate or low levels of anxiety. Diagnostic groupings must be distinguishable from one another. Features used to describe a category must occur tgt reguarly, in one or more situations or as measured by one or more methods. Interrater reliability: whether different diagnosticians use the same category to describe a person"s behaviour. Test-retest reliability: whether the use of a category is stable over some reasonable period of time.
