Deafness: a hearing loss that is so severe that the child is impaired in processing linguistic information through hearing, with or without amplification, that adversely affects a child"s educational performance. Hearing loss: a loss in hearing, whether permanent or fluctuating that adversely affects a child"s education performance but that is not included under the definition of deafness. A child who is deaf cannot use hearing to understand speech. Even with a hearing aid, the hearing loss is too great to allow a deaf child to understand speech through the ears alone. Although most deaf people perceive some sounds through residual hearing, they use vision as the primary sensory mode for learning and communication. Children who are hard of hearing can use their hearing o understand speech, generally with the help of a hearing aid. Members of the deaf community share a common language and social practices.
