Inborn errors of metabolism help the body convert one substance into another. Any maternal conditions that impairs the transport of oxygen and nutrients to the fetus or the exchange of metabolic waste products between mother and fetus has the potential to act deleteriously on fetal development: rubella, syphilis. critical period is a part of the life cycle during which the developing organism is particularly sensitive or responsive to specific environmental forces. affects developing organs in 1st trimester especially. produces destructive lesions in already developed organs. affects fetus after the 16th or 18th week: drugs, prescription drugs, fasd, maternal smoking, maternal nutrition y birth and neonatal development, labour, delivery and after birth, neological impairments.
