Studies suggest some animals have a rudimentary sense of self, such as chimpanzees and the rouge test, touching the red dye on themselves they see in the mirror. Self-recognition develops at around 18-24 months of age in humans. Self-schemas: an organized body of knowledge about the self (attitudes, personality, traits) that influence what people notice, think, and remember about themselves. Desire to see ourselves in a positive light can influence which of our past actions we are most likely to remember. Self-concept clarity: the extent to which knowledge about the self is stable, and clearly and consistently defined (jennifer campbell) Collectivist cultures often have a lower self-concept clarity, but this was much less linked to self-esteem than in individualist cultures. Research found people who are low in this tend to have low self-esteem, are more depression-prone, more neurotic, and less away of their internal states than those high in self-concept clarity.
