Document Summary
Chapter 5 writing and evaluating test items. Types of test items: selected response (any test where you select from a variety of responses, e. g. dichotomous (t/f), mc, likert scale (attitudes and beliefs), category, q-sort (cards with statements, constructed response. Disadv: guessing (low reliability) intrusion of error because you have 50% chance of guessing correctly. More than two alternatives (other than that, same as last in many respects) Disadv: may test memory rather than comprehension. Distractors should not be obvious or ambiguous. If distractors are bad, more items less reliable test. Intrusion of error due to e. g. reading time, comprehension, etc: so basically, too many means it takes too long. Unfocused stem (question): test takers should not have to read response options to know what the question is asking. Negative stem: a(cid:448)oid (cid:374)egati(cid:448)e te(cid:396)(cid:373)s (cid:894)e. g. (cid:862)(cid:374)ot(cid:863)(cid:895) very easy to miss these.
