Psychology 2115A/B Chapter Notes - Chapter 14: Lamellar Corpuscle, Secondary Somatosensory Cortex, Cutaneous Receptor
Document Summary
Chapter 14 the cutaneous senses: we often put less value on the sense of touch in comparison to see and hearing. Motivation to have sex is derived from cutaneous senses. Merkel receptor (sa1): located close to the surface of the skin, near the epidermis. They have small receptive fields close to the surface called a cutaneous receptive field, which when stimulated, influences the firing of the neuron. (fine details like reading braile) Ruffini cylinder (sa2): located deeper in the skin, and have large receptive fields. Applied to continuous touch: 2) rapidly adapting (ra) receptors: respond with bursts of firing just at the onset and offset of a pressure stimulus. Meissner corpuscle (ra1): located close to the surface of the skin, near the epidermis. They have small receptive fields close to the surface called a cutaneous receptive field, which when stimulated, influences the firing of the neuron. Applied when the stimulus is applied and removed.
