Imagery is completely top down processing, because you form an image using high level processing. Imagery is a powerful tool in memory the method of loci. Create a visual image of each item, and place each item in a room in the house. Tie what you need to remember to something you will not forget peg word method. Example: one is a gun, two is a shoe etc. Use the rhyme to learn other ones. We tend to remember things better when they relate to us. How readily you can bring an image to mind. Words that are concrete nouns have higher ratings, because they are easier to visualize than words that are not concrete nouns (less memorable) High imagery words are dually coded, thus they are more easily memorized. Dual coding = sound of word, plus image associated with it.
