27 year old h. m. brain surgery to alleviate severe epilepsy electrical seizures in brain. Eegs convulsions originated from medial temporal lobes (mtl) particularly susceptible: medial temporal lobectomy - removed, hippocampus, amygdala, rhinal cortex, both mtl is removed. Type of amnesia according to the time period affected: different tests used to assess h. m. "s amnesia, h. m. received many tests to assess his particular deficits, brenda milner, mcgill studied his memory problems. 7, 8, 1, 4, 2 (presented until repeated correctly. Stm limit is 7+/- 2: block-tapping memory-span test. Could only learn a sequence of 5 -> inability to get long-term information in. Subject must correctly repeat the sequence of tapped blocks: mirror-drawing test. Showed that hm"s anterograde amnesia not for all types of long term memories. 10 sessions per day, 3 days of sessions: hm got better in the course of the day, doesn"t recall doing it but progressively made fewer mistakes, wasn"t aware he did this before.
