Somatic nervous system interacts with the external environment. Carry motor signals from internal organs to the cns. Present in both the somatic and autonomic nervous systems. Carry motor signals from the cns to internal organs. Project from the cns in the lumbar and thoracic (back & chest areas of the spinal cord) Synapse a substantial distance from their target organs. Stimulate, organize and mobilize energy resources in threatening situations. Only present in the autonomic nervous system. Project from the brain and sacral (lower back region of the spinal cord) Synapse near their target organs; short second stage neurons. Only nerves in the pns that do not project from the spinal cord. 12 pairs of nerves that project from the brain. Some are just sensory nerves, but most contain both sensory and motor neurons. Functions are commonly assessed as a basis for diagnosis. Sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves are two stage neural paths.
