Nonempirical methods: authority- source of info based on someone else"s knowledge. B/c authorities often disagree among themselves, we are inclined to reject authority as a way of knowing. Authorities tend to assert their beliefs forcefully, do not allow questioning: logic- source of knowledge based on deductive or inductive reasoning. Logical statements follow that if the rst two statements are true, then the third follows logically, and must be true based on the rst two statements. Tim is a human, therefore tim is a dog. A statement can be logically valid and still not be true because it assumes something to be the case that is not. Eg. the statement tim is a dog is logically valid, but the statement that dogs are humans is not actually the case. Empirical methods: intuition- a way of knowing based on spontaneous, instinctive processes rather than logic or reasoning.
